Incredible Carl Hagelin signed forward by the Anaheim Ducks

Despite the predictable plots, the trilogy’s commercial success led to Disney founding a real life ice hockey team, based in Anaheim, California. Many hockey purists cringed at the idea of a team being founded by Disney Corp and named after a kids’ movie but, unlike its fictional namesake, the strength of the team surprised fans and the Ducks had an excellent first season, proving them to be more than just a movie spin off.

Anaheim GM Bob Murray said that Hagelin is the type of player his club needed after evaluating him in the playoffs and how they were defeated by the Blackhawks in the playoffs. “You see who’s in the finals and you see how we got beat — the speed element of the game is getting bigger and bigger and bigger. So we have to move along with the times, and we got a guy that can really skate,” he said.

Over the years that I have been a fan of ice hockey I have always had a favorite ice hockey team that I have cheered for.

I have to admit that my favorite team has changed every now and then though, but that is merely because I have been moving around from city to city.

I guess that humans somehow change their emotions depending on where they life.

One big reason for this might be that it is easier to cheer for the same ice hockey team as your hockey friends cheer for or people at your workplace cheer for.

In 1994, after more than fifty years of waiting, fans of the New York Rangers watched as their team finally had a shot at the NHL Stanley Cup. In the championship series, which was tied at three a piece, the Rangers and the Vancouver Canucks played the final game 7. The Canucks played hard hockey during the last 20 minutes of the game; they were relentless. Amazingly, New York held on to a 3-2 lead and won the coveted trophy. After 54 years, fans finally had cause to celebrate.

April 17 is a day for New York Islander fans will not forget soon. This game, against the Washington Capitals, was also a game 7, meaning winner advanced to the next series. The Islanders won this game on a thrilling shot that hit the goalpost before going into the net. This happened in the 4th overtime period! Talk about getting your money’s worth.

If you like long hockey games like that one, you would have loved the 2010 college playoff game between Quinnipac University and Union College. After 60 minutes of regular play and 90 minutes of overtime, the game was still tied at 2. Quinnipac ultimately scored at 90:22 of overtime. This marked the longest hockey game in the history of NCAA.

Public relations for the game of hockey is not as easy as it used to be.  Today, more and more parents are concerned that the game of hockey is too bloody and too violent.  It isn’t really however, in the United States of America we are trying to develop young people with good sportsmanship and trying to create all athletes is equals.
